Swim Skills Every Traveller Needs Before Their Next Vacation

Before you board your next flight to a tropical destination or hop on that cruise, there are a few essential swim skills every traveller should feel confident about. Whether you're lounging by the pool, exploring waterfalls, or trying out water sports, here’s what you’ll want to master:

1. Treading Water for 1 Minute
This is your go-to survival skill. It allows you to stay afloat in deep water without needing to swim forward. Great for surprise dips in deeper areas or if you’re knocked off balance while snorkelling.

2. Jump In and Come Up for Air
Many resort pools or water attractions require you to jump in from a ledge. Practising safe entries and surfacing confidently will give you a calm edge in those moments.

3. Spin, Orient, and Swim to Safety
If you fall unexpectedly into water (especially off a boat), it’s crucial to reorient yourself. Spinning in the water and identifying the safest exit point could be lifesaving.

4. Climbing Out Without a Ladder
Not all pools have easy exits. Being able to get yourself out from the deep end, without help, ensures you can confidently enjoy your surroundings without relying on others.

5. Swimming One Pool Length (25 Metres)
If you can swim one length without stopping, you’re far more capable of handling yourself if the current picks up or a planned swim stretches out longer than expected.

Vacation is about relaxation, not stress. Make sure your swim skills keep up with your adventures.
